It has been two-hundred years since Daendels built a road, which was named ‘De Groote Postweg’, and organized a chief administration to handle that place which is called ‘Bandung‘ now. Yes, Bandung just celebrated its 200th Anniversary on September 25, 2010. During two centuries, Bandung has developed into sort of beautiful city and dubbed as ‘Parijs van Java’ or the Paris of Java. Many factors made people want to visit this city, including its culture, shopping center, weather and the people itself.
As the capital city of West Java, Bandung also becomes the central city of culture, particularly Sundanese culture. There are many culture centers, and one of the most famous culture centers is Saung Angklung Udjo. Here we can see lots of Sundanese culture performances, like angklung of course, Tari Jaipong, Tari Topeng, wayang and many Sundanese ornaments. Nowadays, many urban artists try to mix the Sundanese culture with modern music. For example, in 2007, there was a performance by groups called Karinding Attack and Polyester Embassy which performed music with bamboo instruments like karinding, angklung, etc.
On every weekend, Bandung will be crowded by many visitors from many cities, especially from Jakarta. Why it happened? Of course, because Bandung is well-known by its shopping centers particularly in factory outlet, clothing, distribution store (distro) and boutique which are located around Dago, Riau and Setiabudi Street. That makes Bandung is well-known as fashion city.
Located 768 m (2,520 ft) above sea level, Bandung has cooler temperatures year-around than most other Indonesian cities. So, it makes Bandung is the best choice to spend your holiday. In the higher land like Lembang, maybe we need to wear our jackets all the time, because it is very cold there. The weather also attracts many people to living in here.
Several years ago, Bandung was named as emerging creative city. It is all because the people, especially the teenagers, are always trying to make innovation. The teenagers love to gathering with other which has the same hobbies and makes a community. One of the examples is Komunitas Onthel Bandung, as we can see every Sunday morning in Dago street when Car Free Day time. Also, they love to make a crowd for celebrating many events like in Helarfest or the most recent event, the anniversary of Bandung. Many of the teenagers were gathered in Dago Street to sing Halo-Halo Bandung together in Dago Street. While singing and dancing, they were also performed ‘Freeze Mob‘, a planned action which the teenagers suddenly stop their movement and surprised other persons.
Actually, I feel so lucky to be born in Bandung. Bandung has many fascinating activities that make the city full of attractions. Furthermore, we have to keep Bandung to be a better city. Although this city has many problems like garbage, transportation and many more, I am sure that we can solve it together and keep the everlasting beauty of Bandung.
